In Winchester Center, Weeknights Out Happen Inside the Shops

From Wednesday, November 4, through Saturday, November 7, Winchester Center has a public evening event four days in a row. A specialty food shop hosts the first, a bookstore the second, and a photography museum the last two. This fall, the town's evening calendar is mostly being written by a few independent businesses on Church Street, Main Street and Shore Road, and each one runs on its own rhythm of drop-in hours, ticketed classes and one-off parties.

The Baseline Is Thursday at 4:30

The steadiest event in Winchester Center needs no reservation. Nouvelle Maison at 30 Church St. pours wine every Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Each week brings two or three wines and a rotating theme. On Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m., the shop runs a Food Spotlight on a rotating selection of pantry items or local producers. Neither one needs a signup. As the shop put it in its fall announcement in Winchester News, residents "are welcome to just show up!"

The time slot matters. A 4:30 to 6:30 window on a Thursday catches the hour between the end of the workday and dinner. Because it needs no signup, it works as a baseline. Most of the rest of the calendar runs on advance tickets and a full evening, with a few free exceptions covered below.

What a Ticket Buys

The ticketed evenings are priced as classes, and most of them send people home with something. Nouvelle Maison's workshops all start at 7 p.m. and cost $70. Book Ends charges for its larger author nights and parties, and the ticket usually includes a book.

Date Venue Event Price Included
Oct. 14, 7 p.m. Nouvelle Maison The Art of Spice Blending with Curio Spice Co. $70 A jar of your own blend and Curio's Spice Flavor Wheel
Oct. 20, 7 p.m. Hadley Hall, 70 Church St., for Book Ends Gretchen Powell Fox, "Shadow and Son" $40 A signed copy of the book
Oct. 26, 9 p.m. Book Ends ACOTAR book six midnight release party $45 The book, trivia, snacks, wine for guests 21+
Nov. 4, 7 p.m. Nouvelle Maison Meet The Spirits: Cognac & Armagnac $70 Tasting and light snacks
Nov. 5, 7 to 9 p.m. Book Ends Grand Tasting Wine Party $35 listed 12+ wines, hors d'oeuvres, 10% off the store
Nov. 12, 7 p.m. Nouvelle Maison The Perfect Board $70 The board you build

Two details are worth checking before you buy. Book Ends listed the grand tasting at $35 in Winchester News, but the Eventbrite listing displayed a higher price. Nouvelle Maison's November 18 "Meet the Wines: Bordeaux" event runs 7 to 9 p.m. and will open a few older vintages. In September the shop said tickets would go online in October.

The November 4 class is also the first in Nouvelle Maison's new Meet the Spirits series, led by spirits expert David Goudreau. The shop says no previous spirits knowledge is required.

A Bookstore With Three Years of Wine Classes

Book Ends at 559 Main Street was a wine venue long before this season. Its own listing says the store has hosted wine classes monthly, sometimes twice a month, for more than three years. Those were seated classes on Wednesdays. The November 5 grand tasting changes the format, and the store describes the shift itself:

"This will be a cocktail party rather than a seated lecture. We'll have wine experts leading tasting tables throughout the store."

Co-owner Lauren chose the wines with the team at Dave's Fresh Pasta in Somerville. Anything you like can be bought from Dave's at a discount, then picked up at its Davis Square shop or delivered within a certain radius. The whole bookstore is 10% off for attendees that night. Guests must be 21 or older, tickets are required in advance, and refunds are available up to seven days before the event. Because it falls on a Thursday instead of the usual Wednesday, regulars of the class series should double-check the date.

Author events run on a separate track, and the free ones are smaller. Book Ends hosts authors Kathleen Reidy and Karen Winn on Monday, October 19, at 7 p.m. to discuss Reidy's novel "Engineering a Love Story." The event is free, light refreshments are served, and registering is optional but guarantees a seat. The ticketed Gretchen Powell Fox launch the next night moves to Hadley Hall at the Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The bookstore notes free street parking around the church, town-center lots about a 10-minute walk away, and the Winchester Center stop on the commuter rail's Lowell Line.

When an event grows too big for the store, it goes to a parish hall, which keeps the evening in the town center.

The Nights That Double-Book

These venues don't coordinate their schedules, so some nights stack up:

  1. Monday, October 19. Winchester Public Library at 80 Washington Street hosts a talk on dogs trained to detect invasive species from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with optional registration. The Reidy and Winn evening at Book Ends begins at 7 p.m. the same night.
  2. Monday, October 26. The library runs an adult greeting-card craft night from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and registration is required. At 9 p.m., an hour after the craft night ends, Book Ends opens its ACOTAR release party.
  3. Thursday, November 5. Fall Town Meeting opens at 7 p.m. in the Winchester High School Auditorium, 80 Skillings Road, with more sessions on November 9 and 12 and a November 16 date listed only if needed. The Book Ends grand tasting starts at the same hour.

The October 26 pairing works on one evening because the times follow each other. The other two make you choose.

The Daytime Calendar Closes First

The evening schedule gets busier just as the daytime one winds down. The Griffin Museum of Photography at 67 Shore Road closes both of its current Winchester exhibitions on October 25: "TLC" and Lua Kobayashi's "The Persistence of Memories." Its satellite gallery's "BU Masters Show 2026 | Traces: Pursuing Process" runs through November 1.

On the Town Common, the Winchester Farmers Market's last Saturday on the town calendar is October 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The weekend before is full of daytime events. The town's Halloween Bash on October 24 includes free trick-or-treating in Winchester Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Earlier, on Sunday, October 18, First Congregational Church holds its Jazz Blessing of the Animals on the Common from 10 to 11 a.m., with Chidley Hall as the rain location.

Once the market closes and the Griffin's fall shows come down, the regular reasons to be downtown move to Thursday afternoons and weeknights at 7.

Four Nights, November 4 Through 7

This is the stretch from the opening, night by night:

  • Wednesday, November 4, 7 p.m. Cognac and Armagnac with David Goudreau at Nouvelle Maison, $70.
  • Thursday, November 5, 7 to 9 p.m. The Book Ends grand tasting. For an earlier start with no signup, Nouvelle Maison's regular Thursday pour runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. the same day.
  • Friday, November 6, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Evan Mirapaul's presentation on violin photography at the Griffin Museum, $8 general admission and free for members.
  • Saturday, November 7, 4 to 6 p.m. A free artists' reception at the Griffin for "Common Time: American Musicality."

After that, the calendar slows down but keeps going. The Perfect Board is November 12, Bordeaux is November 18, and Book Ends' Indie Author Showcase runs from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 21. On December 1, Nouvelle Maison holds a holiday tablescaping workshop with Christina Wikman, an interior designer and co-founder of Chestnut Grove Design Group, and the second year of its Champagne and caviar evening.
